Upgrading units no longer takes a special building, so you don't have to ferry guys from city to city to get everyone up to date. Corruption is now just a flat income penalty for the whole nation, so you no longer have the "useless city" problem of Civ3. The new AI system is also great- you can actually form a meaninful relationship with another nation without having them forget about your help when you're in need or backstab you the second they can gain a small material advantage from it.Īlso, many annoyances of the past are gone. The added importance of resources gives more trade oppertunities and makes getting good turf to place your cities extra important. Luxaries are as they were before- happy people. Strategic resources, as always, let you build certain units but some of them now also give your cities extra production. Food resources give you health health is what exists instead of pollution, and is important for having large cities. Besides the tile bonus, they now pass a second bonus to every city connected to them. All of those little resources you used to see that gave tile bonuses, like corn, are now proper resources as things like bronze, iron, coal, oil, and luxaries used to be. Much like Great People, resources have evolved. (OK, great people did exist before, but Civ 4's system is so much more advanced it feels new) However, it has the same addictive gameplay of the previous games while adding solid new concepts like religion and great people. It's not flawless- most notably, the user interface in many cases has actually gotten worse, late game techs come way too fast, and the AI still doesn't know how to use a navy properly or perform an overseas invasion. If you like the Civ games, definitely pick it up.
